Maria hid behind her bedroom door with a look of quiet determination etched on her face. She could hear the footsteps as someone tried to sneak up the creaky steps of her apartment in New Mexico. She’d left the door locked, but it appeared they had picked the lock.

Varrick, her former master’s assassin, had found her.

She wondered what gave her away. She was halfway across the world, using a completely different name. But that was inconsequential. He was here now, and knowing how he found her wouldn’t change that. As her bedroom door creaked open, she aimed her pistol at the shadow slinking into the room.

Her past was unforgiving, but so was she.
